Egypt's Muslim
Brotherhood (MB) presidential hopeful Mohamed Morsi says the life
sentence for former dictator Hosni Mubarak is a “farce,” calling for
mass protests against the verdict.
On Saturday, Morsi called for mass protests in the capital Cairo's Liberation Square to protest at Mubarak's verdict, saying the former dictator must face retrial that should provide necessary evidence for a just punishment.
In a final verdict hearing in a Cairo court on Saturday, the ex-dictator as well as former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli were sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of around 900 protesters during the country’s popular uprising that ended his three-decade rule.
The court also dropped charges against six other security officials, who were brought to trial for the killing of the protesters.
The verdict sparked fierce clashes between the families of the victims and security officials inside the court.
Angry spectators called the court illegitimate and demanded the execution of Mubarak.
Meanwhile, Mubarak’s last premier, who faces Morsi in presidential runoff on June 16-17, said the life sentence against the former dictator "must be accepted."
